Curriculum Overview

First grade marks the shift from play-based learning to a more structured academic journey for children ages 6–7. Our program builds strong foundations in literacy and numeracy through an integrated approach combining Orton-Gillingham, Science of Reading principles, Singapore Math, and hands-on science. We balance academic rigor with creativity, character development, and a genuine love of learning. Blending Waldorf-inspired rhythm and beauty with evidence-based practices, students grow academically while developing confidence, resilience, and curiosity.

In our nurturing environment, we support the natural development of five- and six-year-olds through activities aligned with their growth needs. With attention to seasonal rhythms, daily routines, and the beauty of nature, we lay the groundwork for healthy development and lifelong learning.

Educational Philosophy

First grade marks the threshold of formal education where wonder meets rigor. Our 1st graders experience a carefully crafted curriculum that honors both the science of learning and the art of childhood. Through proven methodologies like Orton-Gillingham and Singapore Math, combined with Waldorf’s emphasis on story, rhythm, and hands-on exploration, we build strong academic foundations while nurturing each child’s natural creativity and curiosity. Every day includes movement, music, art, and time in nature, ensuring our students grow in mind, body, and spirit.

Student Photography & Image Protection

At Mountain Oak Community School, your child’s safety and privacy are of the highest importance.

We want to inform our families that we have officially severed ties with Lifetouch Photography and any affiliated companies. Additionally, we are taking formal legal steps, including issuing a demand letter, to require the removal of all student photo media from Lifetouch’s archives.

We are committed to ensuring that student images are handled responsibly and in alignment with our standards for privacy and security.
