A Journey Through History and Discovery

In 6th grade, students embark on a transformative journey through ancient civilizations and medieval times, developing critical thinking skills while exploring the foundations of our modern world. Through the Waldorf approach, learning becomes an adventure that connects historical understanding with practical skills and artistic expression.

Main Lesson Skills

Students develop sophisticated organizational abilities and multitasking skills essential for academic success. They learn to express academic concepts through various artistic mediums, integrating mathematical practices with science and engineering principles. This holistic approach strengthens both analytical thinking and creative expression, preparing students for complex problem-solving across all disciplines.

Language Arts

Advanced writing skills flourish as students master paragraph and essay structures, develop effective note-taking strategies, and practice self-editing techniques. They explore expository, descriptive, and narrative writing while crafting comprehensive reports. Grammar study deepens with sentence analysis, exploring subjects, predicates, and objects, while students discover the power of Latin root words, prefixes, and suffixes to expand their vocabulary and understanding.

Literature/Social Studies/Geography

Students journey through the grandeur of Rome and its lasting legal legacy, explore the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, and examine the complex motivations behind the Crusades. They study the rise of Islam and the prophet Muhammad, delving into medieval society and the noble tales of chivalry. This comprehensive global studies approach traces human civilization from ancient times through the Renaissance, fostering deep cultural understanding and historical perspective.

Mathematics

Practical business mathematics comes alive through real-world applications of decimals, percentages, interest calculations, and profit and loss scenarios. Students explore economic principles while mastering computation and problem-solving strategies. Geometric understanding deepens through the eight basic constructions and intricate patterns based on six and twelve divisions of the circle, while algebraic thinking develops through work with rational numbers and algebraic expressions.

Sciences

Earth sciences unfold through hands-on mapmaking and exploration of wind and water currents, meridians, and climate patterns. Students investigate acoustics, optics, heat, magnetism, and static electricity through engaging experiments. The mineral world reveals its secrets through study of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks, precious stones, and metals. Astronomical observations connect students to cosmic rhythms through moon cycles, star movements, and the intricate relationships between sun, moon, and earth.

Arts

Artistic expression reaches new heights through the ethereal veil painting technique and detailed landscape work. Students develop observational skills through nature sketching and create precise technical illustrations of their science experiments. Mastery of pastel chalk and charcoal drawings enhances their ability to capture light, shadow, and texture. Woodworking projects challenge students to create convex egg forms and wooden swords, connecting them to medieval craftsmanship traditions.

Foreign Language

Spanish language skills flourish through engaging conversational practice, systematic grammar study, and rich vocabulary development. Students explore the wisdom embedded in Spanish proverbs, connecting language learning to cultural understanding and philosophical reflection. This immersive approach builds confidence in communication while fostering appreciation for Hispanic cultures and traditions.

Handwork

Advanced hand sewing skills develop through the creation of three-dimensional soft sculptures, including gusseted animals that require careful pattern creation and precise stitching. Students learn to visualize and construct complex forms, developing spatial reasoning and fine motor skills while creating beautiful, functional objects that reflect their growing artistic sophistication and technical mastery.

Music

Musical expression deepens through continued recorder mastery and participation in orchestra and chorus. Students explore the rich musical heritage of the Middle Ages and ancient Rome, connecting historical study with musical performance. This integration of music and history creates a multisensory learning experience that enhances both musical skills and historical understanding while fostering ensemble cooperation and individual artistic growth.

Physical Education

Physical development takes on historical dimensions through cooperative games and medieval-inspired activities that challenge students to test their growing abilities. These carefully designed games build strength, coordination, and teamwork skills while connecting to the historical periods being studied. Students develop both physical competence and historical imagination through movement experiences that honor the spirit of medieval traditions.

Waldorf Philosophy in Action

Our 6th grade curriculum embodies the Waldorf principle of meeting children where they are developmentally. As students navigate the transition from childhood to adolescence, they explore themes of justice, authority, and human achievement through the lens of ancient civilizations and medieval times, building both knowledge and character.
